Issue No. 014

In my opinion, if women and gender-expanding people want to run for office we can’t knock on anybody’s doors; we have to build our own house.
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
  1. Four Dope Queens (Rashida Tlaib, Lucy McBath, Sharice Davids and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez)

Dope: The 2018 midterm elections made history with a record number of over 100 female candidates winning seats in Congress.  Not to pick favorites, but 29 year old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s instagram is guaranteed to teach you more about how politics work (often while making mac-n-cheese in her instant pot) than your high school and college education combined. Be sure to follow her at @ocasio2018.

  2. Worth the Watch: The Passage

Dope: This 22 minute short film has won six top prizes at film festivals all over the world.  At one of those festivals, I was a jury member and am proud to have awarded it for its charming lead character who is equal parts Buster Keaton and Chris Farley, who is being hunted down by what seems like everyone in the world. This short is deeply absurd, deeply human and totally worth the watch.

  3. The Biodiversity Heritage Unshelves 2 Million Images Containing Wonder of All Kinds

Dope / Not Dope: Humankind is slowly (or not so slowly depending on how you count it) reshaping Earth with disastrous outcomes.  Scientists estimate that dozens of species go extinct each day. Two years ago, The Biodiversity Heritage Library flooded Flickr with millions of stunning images of our world. Bookmark it and scroll for moral and/or creative inspiration.

  4. Even a Girl Can Do it!

Dope: Being a modern day gal in a man’s world is tough work. Thankfully, Sarah Cooper breaks it down in the simplest terms that even the most basic broad can understand...with pictures!

  5. Marble Athletics are Dope

Dope / Not Dope: After the Dodgers loss the World Series (again) I went to a dark place. Thankfully, I was saved by the Marblelypics Reddit thread. If you are new to Marble athletics, the 2018 Winter Opening Ceremony followed by the first event (the ice dash) is a great place to start.

  6. EZ Dinner Party for 10

Dope: I recently hosted a dinner for 10 at my apartment and was looking to make something new and tasty that would allow me to enjoy the company of my guests and not get stuck in the kitchen. I was able to purchase most of these ingredients from my local 99 cent store and assembled in my crockpot the morning of and kept on low all day. When I returned home, my apartment had a rich, savory scent that announced, “fall is here!” While guests were arriving, we served homemade dumplings (half with impossible burger, half with ground beef) with sake. For the main course, I paired the curry with a thai peanut salad, roasted shishito peppers, and chicken satay skewers.  Set the table with an abundance of lime wedges and a couple of bottles of dry riesling and you are good to go.

  7. Using the Scientific Theory to Make the "Perfect Relaxing Song"

Dope: Work related stress cause more deaths in America than diabetes or Alzheimer's disease. Every year, my most spun album on Spotify is Weightless by the Manchester trio Marconi Union thanks to an article covering a study that learned the title track (both the 8 minute and 10 hour version) resulted in a 65% reduction in participants overall anxiety and 35% reduction in their usual physiological resting rates. The band worked with sound therapists to create the world’s most relaxing song. The study concluded the top 10 most relaxing songs ever which includes some obvious players such as Enya, Coldplay, and Mozart.
